Lecture – “The Inklings: Creativity, Community, and Vocation”

Gibble Auditorium in the Master's Center at Elizabethtown College | Elizabethtown, false 17022

Drs. David and Crystal Downing, co-directors of the Marion E. Wade Center, speak on the relationship between C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien during their Scholarship and Creative Arts Keynote address “The Inklings: Creativity, Community, and Vocation.” Two of the best-selling authors of the 20th century, C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, were also best friends. Both belonged to an informal literary club, The Inklings, who on Tuesdays for beer and banter and on Thursday evenings to read and critique each other's works in progress. Most writers groups fall apart sooner rather than later, plagued by rival egos or incompatible literary tastes. But the Inklings met regularly for nearly 20 years, a platform for Tolkien to refine his Lord of the Rings epic and for Lewis to reinvent himself in his later years as a children's writer. The Inklings provide a valuable model for later generations on how to balance personal ambitions with membership in a creative community.
