Visiting Bird-in-Hand
Bird-in-Hand takes its name from a 1734 inn whose signboard showed a bird resting in a hand, a reference to the old proverb, and the village has been feeding and lodging travelers on the Old Philadelphia Pike ever since. It sits on Route 340 between Lancaster City and Intercourse, surrounded on every side by working Amish farms, and much of the visitor economy is still run by a handful of local families, most visibly the Smuckers.
Food is the draw. The Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord lays out the county's classic all-you-can-eat Pennsylvania Dutch spread, the Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market gathers dozens of stands under one roof, the Bakeshop on Gibbons Road turns out shoo-fly pie and whoopie pies, and Kauffman's Fruit Farm sells from its own orchards. At Plain & Fancy Farm, the Amish Experience pairs a family-style feast with the Jacob's Choice theater show and guided farmhouse tours.
To see the farmland itself, Aaron and Jessica's Buggy Rides and Abe's Buggy Rides both roll out on backroad loops, the United States Hot Air Balloon Team launches flights over Amish Country, and the Pinetown Covered Bridge crosses the Conestoga just north of the village.
