Visiting Quarryville
Quarryville anchors the Solanco region, southern Lancaster County, along Route 222 about 15 miles south of Lancaster City, where the rolling farmland runs down toward the Susquehanna River. The borough has its own claim on Groundhog Day: the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge has consulted "Octoraro Orphie" for a spring forecast every February 2nd since 1907, making Quarryville one of the oldest groundhog-prognostication towns in the country.
The southern end of the county is the draw for visitors. Susquehannock State Park overlooks the river gorge with hiking trails and hawk-watching, the Robert Fulton Birthplace preserves the boyhood home of the steamboat inventor, and Jackson's Sawmill Covered Bridge is one of several historic spans in the area. Golfers play Tanglewood Manor, and the Solanco Fairgrounds host the Solanco Fair each September, one of the region's largest agricultural fairs.
In town, Quarryville keeps it local: Quarryville Family Restaurant and Hometown Kitchen for sit-down meals, several family pizzerias, Dottie's Snack Bar for a quick bite, and Maplehofe Dairy for milk and ice cream straight from the farm. Good's Store and BB's Grocery Outlet cover everyday shopping for the surrounding Solanco communities.
